Through the power of sport, Special Olympics strives to create a better world by fostering the acceptance and inclusion of all people. Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the Special Olympics movement has grown to more than 4.4 million athletes in 177 countries. Los Angeles has been selected as the Host City for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games and will bring 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches from 177 countries, along with 300,000 volunteers and 500,000 spectators, to Los Angeles from July 25-August 2, making it the single biggest sports and humanitarian event anywhere in the world in 2015!
Host Town Palmdale
The City of Palmdale is pleased to announce that it has been officially selected to be a Special Olympics World Games Host Town as part of the 2015 World Games! Before a single one of the 7,000 Special Olympics athletes competes at the 2015 World Games, Special Olympics delegations from around the world will be treated to three memorable days of recreation, entertainment, and cultural exchange at their Host Towns, including Palmdale, from July 21-July 24, 2015.
Palmdale will welcome and host delegations from Cyprus and St. Lucia
The Cyprus delegation will compete in Aquatics, Athletics, Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Cycling, Football (Soccer), and Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics. The St. Lucia delegation will compete in Athletics, Bocce and Football (Soccer).

Special Olympics Mission
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
