Families in Action
The
Families in Action program is funded by the City of Palmdale with additional support from Los Angeles County. The program offers eight different courses to parents in the Antelope Valley, as well as two courses in Spanish.
Becoming a Love and Logic Parent, a seven week course, offers an approach to discipline that places the adult in control while at the same time placing the child in a thinking mode. Effective for both parents and teachers,
Love and Logic enables adults to avoid the cycle of defiance that so often turns simple daily events into major power struggles with children.
Strengthening Stepfamilies, a three-week mini-course, tackles the traumas and opportunities of the fluid family structure including the remolding, reshaping and repopulating of family units through divorce and remarriage. Participants will discover the potential joys and opportunities of their new families as Strengthening Stepfamilies teaches the skills that help children and teens adjust to their changed family and help pinpoint the developmental stages in the stepfamily.
Cooperative Parenting and Divorce, an eight-week course, is designed to assist divorcing or divorced parents in reducing parental conflict and risk factors associated with the child's post-divorce adjustment. The program also benefits the divorced parents by offering information on rebuilding their lives as individuals, fostering sensitivity to their children's needs and focusing on child-rearing issues rather than past marital issues.

Families in
Action will continue to offer the ten-week
Strong-Willed or Out-of-Control Children course in conjunction with
A Teen Guide to Choosing Success, Choosing Life. The
Strong-Willed course provides education in a multilevel model, combining instruction with topic-focused, self-help parent groups. The curriculum utilizes behavioral interventions to present practical, no-nonsense solutions to the serious problems parents face raising children today.
Teen Guide to Choosing Success, Choosing Life is a five-week course which complements the adult
Strong-Willed or
Out-of-Control series. Teens enrolling in this curriculum will learn to analyze the choices they make, think about why they make those choices and learn tips and strategies to make their lives better and happier.
Working Out Conflicts: Conflict is a major source of stress in many young people's lives. It can be the cause of violence. Not knowing how to respond to conflict makes it worse. This five-week class is filled with practical things teens can do to get a handle on conflict and get along better with all the people in their lives.
New Baby, Now What?, a five-week class for parents of infants and toddlers will present a new guest speaker each week. Topics include: Child Development, Proper Nutrition, Child Safety, Medical and Dental Schedules, Positive Discipline, Child-Proofing Your Home, Playing and School Readiness, Socialization, Stress Management, Community Resources, and Support
Energize Your Relationship, a seven-week workshop for couples, focuses on the three building blocks of a happy healthy relationship: commitment, caring, and conflict resolution. Learn how to enhance, strengthen, and solidify your relationship in this fun, informative workshop.
