What Is Park Watch?

Park Watch is an effective crime prevention program for your neighborhood park. The goal of Park Watch is to prevent crime and vandalism through community involvement. Similar to Neighborhood Watch programs, Park Watch asks park users to be extra eyes and ears for the Sheriff's and parks and recreation departments. The Park Watch program is an effort to report and prevent crime and vandalism to playground, park equipment and park facilities; to report suspicious activities in parks; to assist in the care and maintenance of our city parks by alerting officials of maintenance needs or other concerns, and to promote public awareness for parks and recreation activities. The Park Watch program asks park patrons and nearby residents to simply keep an eye out while at the park – your eyes and ears are a valuable crime prevention tool!

How Can You Be Involved?

As a resident or park patron, you are in a unique position to both enjoy and protect our parks. Although city staff and the Palmdale Sheriff's Station patrol the parks on a regular basis, they may not see everything that you see. To participate in Park Watch, we simply ask you to report suspicious or illegal activity to the Sheriff's Department, and vandalism, maintenance or other issues by calling the City of Palmdale's 94-PRIDE hotline. Your action of reporting allows law enforcement and the City to be proactive in addressing concerns. The benefits for doing your part will be evident by:

A reduction in negative incidents
A reduction in repair and restoration costs for facilities and equipment
Increased safety for children and park patrons
Increased community pride
A concerned community can deter crime by reporting suspicious activities. The best tool to reduce crime is a good neighbor. Park Watch asks you to be a good neighbor to our local parks.

Never put yourself or others at risk—Do not intercede!
Park Watch only asks people to be alert, observant and caring. Contact the appropriate agency so action may be taken by the authorities to address the problem.

How Do I Report What I See?

Please report activities as follows:

To report a fire, medical emergency, or a crime in progress, call 911
To report a suspicious person, vehicle or activity that concerns you, or to report a crime that has already been committed, call the Palmdale Sheriff's Station non-emergency number 661/272-2400
To report maintenance emergencies that require immediate attention (water leaks, broken windows, broken or unsafe equipment), call the City's Maintenance Division at 267-5338 (Mon.-Thurs., 7:30 am-6 pm) or the After-Hours Emergency number at 266-3195.
For all other concerns, call the City's 24-hour hotline, 94-PRIDE (947-7433), select option "6" for Park Watch. Staff reviews all Park Watch calls during regular business hours and will take appropriate action to address your concern.

Suspicious activities to watch for and report to the Sheriff's Department

Types of activities to watch for and report could include:

Fighting or harassment
Alcohol or illegal drug use
Camping or park use after closing
Motorized vehicles on park grounds
Individuals vandalizing or defacing facilities or equipment
Destruction of natural resources
Selling, peddling or soliciting – prohibited, except during special events
Amplified sound or loud music – except during special events
Suspicious activity such as people peering in car windows, trying door handles, sitting in cars talking to passing children, or business transactions being conducted from a vehicle
Any type of crime in progress or a crime that has already been committed, such as vehicle or building break-in

Activities to watch for and report to 94-PRIDE or Maintenance Division

If immediate attention is necessary to address a maintenance issue, please call the Maintenance Division direct at 267-5338 or the After-Hours Emergency number 266-3195. All other issues may be reported using 94-PRIDE for a non-emergency response.

Water leaks or running water - in public restrooms, fountains or broken sprinklers
Broken or unsafe equipment
Exterior lights not working
Vandalism, such as graffiti (already occurred, please note location)
If you see something that doesn't seem right, but it's not at the level you would contact the Sheriff's Department for, please call and leave a message on 94-PRIDE. If necessary, staff will direct resources to address the issue or concern.

When You Call

A few things to keep in mind when you report information to the Sheriff's Department:

Stay on the line and answer any questions from the dispatcher
Provide as much detail about the activity, individuals or vehicles (persons description, license plate numbers) involved if they can be safely determined
Provide the name and address of the park you are calling from. Due to the large size of some parks, please provide a detailed description of where the problem is located within the park using landmarks such as "near the basketball courts," "on the north side of soccer field" or "in the skate park"

Please Remember

All calls to the Sheriff's Station are prioritized. Priority is determined by the Sheriff's Department based on the availability of officers in proximity to the location and the number of other emergent calls received. Please do not expect an immediate response for non-emergency calls. All calls to the 94-PRIDE hotline will be reviewed and addressed by staff during normal business hours, Mon. – Thurs. 7:30 am – 6 pm.

Report Non-Emergency Park Watch Issues Online

For issues requiring an immediate response from the Sheriff's Department, please do not submit your concern online, please call the Palmdale Station at 272-2400. For other non-emergency concerns at any of our City parks please complete and submit the online report form.
