Palmdale Oasis Park and Marie Kerr Park Expansion
The $42 million "Vision for the Future" park projects are nearly complete. The projects - funded in part by a $31.4 million bond assessment passed by Palmdale residents - include a new recreation center, swimming pool, and water park on the eastside of Palmdale at the Palmdale Oasis Park. Marie Kerr Park on the westside of Palmdale now has an amphitheater, softball complex, skatepark, and swimming pool.
"These parks will add so much to the quality of life in Palmdale," said Mayor Jim Ledford during groundbreaking ceremonies in March 2004.
The new 33-acre Palmdale Oasis Park is located at 3850 East Avenue S, and the 40-acre expansion of Marie Kerr Park is located at 2723 Rancho Vista Boulevard.
The new recreation center at Palmdale Oasis Park opened in October 2005 and a grand opening was held December 3, 2005. DryTown Water Park & Mining Company - also located at Palmdale Oasis Park - opened to the public on May 27, 2006. A new 4-6 lane racer slide is anticipated to be constructed in early 2009 and opened to the public in May 2009.
The Palmdale Amphitheater on the westside opened to the public on July 16, 2005 and hosts an annual Summer Concert Series and Family Movie Night. Marie Kerr Park also hosts the award winning Palmdale Fall Festival. The Best of the West Softball complex has been completed, as well as the The Marie Kerr Park Swimming Pool, which is anticipated to be covered by December 2009. Staff is currently looking at a pool enclosure structure designed by Charles Walton Associates and OpenAire Structures. This structure is composed largely of glass and will have retractable roofs to allow sunlight in and provide for increased ventilation. A new recreation center is in the works and is anticipated to be completed in October 2008.
