City of Palmdale Public Works
ADA Compliance
As part of the City's ongoing effort to enhance pedestrian safety and to comply with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the State's disabled Access Guidelines, the City of Palmdale ADA Compliance Program was established to fund improvements to existing city facilities, parks, and streets to ensure compliance with current laws. On an annual basis this program will identify and prioritized the City's ramp needs, especially in the vicinity of schools, City facilities, and businesses.
During fiscal year 2005-06, the ADA Compliance Program began a retrofit program of all sidewalk wheelchair ramps with detectable warning domes. Older type curb ramps are challenging for pedestrians with vision impairments to use and it is sometimes difficult to detect the transition between the sidewalk and the street. In addition to the domes, the retrofit will have a visual contrast with the adjacent walking surfaces.
With limited resources, the City must annually prioritize individual projects. The City aggressively seeks outside funding from sources including various federal, state and county agencies to complete the needed improvements. However, since the City adopted the ADA Act in 1990, the City has invested over $2 million in improvements to assist the disabled in accessing City facilities, parks, and streets. The following is a partial list of these projects:
- Focus Neighborhood No. 4 Ave. R to R-4
- Boulders Mobile Home Parks ADA Site Improvement
