Park Development


Palmdale residents share pride in the many features that make the community a special place to live. Some of the most important public resources are parks, playfields, and recreation facilities. Parks are a vital part of the quality of life and provide healthy recreation opportunities for families and people of all ages. In addition, recreation programs help keep children off the streets and away from gangs and crimes. Since 1990 the City of Palmdale's population has grown by more than 100 percent. This growth has greatly increased the demand for City parks and recreation facilities and services. The following is a list of the parks that the City has established to date:

Community Parks
Pelona Vista Park: This park is 73 acres and is located on the west side of the Antelope Valley Freeway, bounded by Rayburn Road and Tierra Subida. The first phase of the project was completed in September 1997 and includes five soccer fields, a walking/jogging trail (3/4 mile), parking lot, and a restroom/maintenance building. The second phase, completed in 2000, includes an additional five soccer fields, restroom facility, and parking. Remaining work to be completed will be a pedestrian bridge, tot lot, and additional picnic amenities.



Domenic Massari Park: This park is 40 acres and is located at the southeast corner of 55th Street East and Avenue R. The park (formerly known as Palms Park) was expanded in 1995 and includes two Little League fields (one lighted), softball and baseball fields (lighted), five soccer fields, tot area (ADA compliant), tennis courts, restrooms, concession area and field house, and parking lot.

Marie Kerr Park: This park is 17 acres and is located at the northeast corner of Rancho Vista Boulevard (Avenue P) and 30th Street West. The park was developed in 1994 and includes an activity building with park office, restroom, storage, sheltered picnic areas, tot lot (ADA compliant), a walking/jogging trail (3/4 mile), two soccer fields, softball field, basketball courts and tennis courts (all lighted), and an 8,500-square-foot skate park. The new 40-acre addition to the existing park site includes the following amenities: public amphitheater, Best of the West Softball Complex, recreation center facility, and a year-round competition lap pool.

Palmdale Oasis Park: This 33-acre park, located along Avenue S from 37th East to 40th East, includes the following amenities: recreation center facility, open play field, and the Dry Town family aquatic facility that includes a zero entry pool, aquatic playground, and a lazy river.

Desert Sands Park: This park is 20 acres and is located at the southwest corner of Avenue P-8 and 3rd Street East. The park was developed in 1992 and includes a 5,000-square-foot facility with park office, restroom, storage, sheltered picnic areas, playgrounds, two softball fields, basketball courts and tennis courts (all lighted), sand volleyball courts, and a lighted soccer field.

William J. McAdam Park: This park is 20 acres and is located at the west side of 30th Street East between Palmdale Boulevard and Avenue R. The park was developed in 1972 and includes outdoor heated swimming pool and building, tennis courts, softball fields, tot lot (ADA compliant), picnic areas, volleyball courts, horseshoe courts, field house with restrooms and equipment checkout and a maintenance garage.

Neighborhood Parks
Poncitlan Square: This two-acre site is located in the downtown Civic Center, bounded by 8th & 9th streets east and avenues Q-9 and Q-10. The site was developed in 1998 and hosts a gazebo, benches, and a Veterans Memorial Garden. The site is used for weddings, receptions and the popular Thursday Night on the Square event.

Melville J. Courson Park: This 7.5-acre site is located at the northeast corner of 10th Street East and Avenue Q-12. The site was developed in 1963 and includes a heated outdoor swimming pool and activity building, lighted basketball and volleyball courts, play lots, field house with restroom and equipment checkout, and picnic areas. Adjacent to the park is the parks and recreation department office building.

Manzanita Heights Park: This five-acre site is located at the northwest corner of 5th Street West and Mesa Verde Avenue. The site was developed in 1988 and includes picnic areas, play lot, a play field, a field house with restrooms and storage, and public phones.

Joshua Hills Park: This 3.6-acre site is located at Fairfield Avenue and Via Del Rio. The site was developed in 1989 and includes picnic areas, small playground, play field, and a field house with restrooms and storage.

Hillside Park: This 10-acre site is located at 50th Street West and Avenue N. The site was developed in 1995 and has 2.5 acres developed as a turf play field. Future development of the park will include a restroom and storage building, additional play field, and a tot lot area.

Future Park Development
Future Yellen Park: The proposed Yellen Park is approximately 25 acres in size and is located at the southwest corner of Avenue S and Hillcrest Drive (52nd Street East).



Future Rancho Vista Park: This park site, located at the intersection of Town Center Drive and Bolz Ranch Road, is adjacent to the proposed Esperanza School and will be used jointly between the City and Westside Union School District.
