City of Palmdale Public Works
Transit Amenities Program
The City of Palmdale implemented the Transit Amenities Program in 1996, with a program goal of providing benches, signage, trash receptacles and shelters along transit routes within the City. Bus service within the City is provided by the Antelope Valley Transit Authority (AVTA), which operates under a Joint Powers Agreement (JPA). The AVTA provides local service for Palmdale, Lancaster and surrounding County areas, along with commuter service to downtown Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley. The City of Palmdale has developed a long-range plan to provide bus benches, trash receptacles, and shelters at each AVTA stop. The City proposes to install additional seventy-eight bus shelters along existing AVTA routes to enhance the use of transit services. The shelters would expand previous improvements the City has provided, by providing refuge from high winds and inclement weather. The shelters are manufactured of metal construction with an anti-graffiti finish, consistent with the previous benches and shelters installed under the City's Transit Amenities Program. The installation of seventy-eight bus shelters are anticipated to begin in early 2008.
