City of Palmdale's 2007 Rose Parade® float

The City of Palmdale float in the 2007 Tournament of Roses® Parade, "Good Nature Begins at Home," was awarded the Past President's Trophy for the Most Creative Use of Floral and Non-Floral Materials. Designed by award-winning float designer Raul Rodriguez and built by Fiesta Parade Floats, the float won the city's second consecutive Rose Parade® trophy.

The 2007 float design's use of a desert tortoise family reflects the City of Palmdale's commitment to family in this beautiful high desert community located 60 miles northeast of Los Angeles. The float featured four actors from the Palmdale Playhouse, which represents one of the many opportunities for good-natured family fun in Palmdale.

The City of Palmdale thanks the more than 600 volunteers from throughout the Antelope Valley that came out to decorate the city's award-winning 2007 float entry.

2007 Rose Parade® Theme

The 118th Rose Parade® themed "Our Good Nature," was broadcast both nationally and internationally on January 1, 2007. The parade featured spirited marching bands from throughout the nation, majestic floral floats, high-stepping equestrian units and our very own City of Palmdale float.

Flowering Detail

More than 20,000 roses along with numerous other floral and non-floral materials were used to create the City of Palmdale's 2007 float. Sunrise warms the desert floor with rays of dazzling roses including golden rust Milva, rich coral Marjan, dark coral Movie Star and warm orange Marianna roses, framed in groupings of hybrid vanda orchids in lavender, red and rust hues. Yucca blossoms of over 10,000 white dendrobium orchid florets bloom on trunks created from black lichen moss. Hot pink roses and purple cattleya orchids form abundant blossoms atop Barrel cactus of green split pea and mung beans and Cholla cactus petaled in fresh and dehydrated eucalyptus leaves. The woody trunks from natural creosote and brittlebush, indigenous to the area, are highlighted throughout the cliff walls.

The Desert Tortoises come to life with skin of leathery carrot and radish seeds. Their realistic shells have been artistically recreated by individually placing each decoration item, one by one, with a combination of brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, black beans, cinnamon bark, montera leaves, sea grape leaves and cobra leaves.

Palmdale Float Wins Princess' Trophy Award in Rose Parade
The City of Palmdale's first-ever entry in the Rose Parade garnered the Princess' Trophy for the most beautiful float 35 feet or under. This trophy is considered the top award for floats in this size category.

Photo of volunteers at workMore than 600 volunteers from Palmdale, the Antelope Valley, and across the United States helped decorate the City of Palmdale's float, which was constructed and decorated in Duarte, Calif.

The City commissioned renowned Rose Parade float artist Raul Rodriguez to design a float entry that featured a magical fairy waving her wand over a cornucopia filled with a bountiful harvest. The fairy concept was taken from the popular Enchanted Fairy Garden attraction at the annual Palmdale Fall Festival, and the bountiful harvest depicts the abundance available to families in the Antelope Valley.

The float's theme was "A Magical Place to Call Home," which combined the City's slogan "A Place to Call Home" and the Rose Parade's 2006 theme "It's Magical."
