Next Generation Youth Council

The City of Palmdale’s Next Generation Youth Council is excited and on the move in Palmdale. The purpose of the Youth Council is to allow the members of the youth community in Palmdale to make recommendations to City staff regarding recreational programming, teen activities and events, community involvement and to voice their concerns as they relate to the teens of the Antelope Valley. Members of the Youth Council are also involved in projects and presentations that relate to youth and have the opportunity to learn about the functions of City government as it relates to the implementation of programs. Palmdale residents between the ages of 12 and 25 are invited to join the Next Generation Youth Council. Meetings are held the 1st Monday of each month from 6:30pm-8pm at the Chimbole Cultural Center located at 38350 Sierra Highway, Palmdale, CA.

Extreme P Renamed "Next Generation"

The youth component of Partners for a Better Palmdale will now be known as the "Next Generation" after Palmdale's youth submitted options and then voted on a new name. The announcement was made by Palmdale City Councilman Steve Hofbauer at the July 26 Thursday Night on the Square event.

Originally called Extreme P, the City of Palmdale challenged its youth to send in ideas for a new name. The entries were compiled, placed on a ballot and voted on at an ice cream and karaoke event held at the Poncitlán Square gazebo on July 17.

"We received a lot of great suggestions from our youth," said Palmdale Youth and Family Services Supervisor Kari Robertson. "We're pleased that our City's young people are taking ownership of their youth group, and we look forward to working with them to help make Palmdale an even better place to live."

Future youth events are being planned to engage Palmdale's youth in various activities and to provide forums for them to voice their opinions on how to improve the quality of life in Palmdale.

"If anyone is interested, especially young people, in working together with the City on youth events, activities and workshops, please contact us by e-mail, krobertson@cityofpalmdale.org, phone at 267-5665, or through our MySpace page, myspace.com/cityofpalmdale," Robertson said.

Xtreme P Youth Forum a Hit!

Palmdale Teens and Young Adults Give Input at 'Xtreme P' Event

The City of Palmdale hosted a free community youth forum Tuesday, May 8 at the Larry Chimbole Cultural Center, located at 38350 Sierra Hwy. Over 450 participants, ages 13 to 25, attended the exciting event and were able to enjoy free pizza and free music with a live DJ. Several lucky winners took home great prizes such as an Apple Ipod, a skateboard, gift certificates and more. The Xtreme P event provided Palmdale's young citizens an opportunity to voice their opinions regarding their community. It is part of the "Partners for a Better Palmdale" program, a citywide effort to build value and create a safer community.

"This is an exciting time for Palmdale's young people. We are very interested in listening closely to what they have to say," said Palmdale Families in Action Coordinator Kari Robertson. "We are asking them to give us ideas and solutions to make Palmdale a better place for children, teens and young adults," she added.

Local businesses also supported the community cause by contributing items towards the event. Special thanks go to sponsors Antelope Valley Mall, Baja Fresh, Barnes and Noble, Cinemark 8, The Coffee Bean, Coldstone's Creamery, Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Lancaster, Drytown Water Park, Food-4-Less, Jamba Juice, The Lancaster Jethawks, Mulligan's Family Fun Center, Pharmacy Rideshop, Shakey's Pizza, Sharkey's, Powder and Sun, and Vince's Pasta and Pizza.

Partners for a Better Palmdale is an intensive communitywide program designed to make Palmdale the safest, healthiest and most vibrant city possible by bringing together the resources of businesses, neighborhoods, community groups, individuals and government. It aims to coordinate and collaborate with all these entities to reduce crime, build community value and engage citizens.
